Momentum Series

Completed over the span of two years, the Momentum Series presents a personal narrative as told through an iconography of invented landscape elements: mountains, oceans and clouds conspire with small boats, winding paths and garden gates to act out the story of creative struggle. To begin this journey, inertia must be overcome by Momentum. The repetitive line of the waves carries us into the world of the work, where we are confronted with high seas or safe harbors, stone walls or open gates, and mountains rise up as obstacles or opportunities. Looking out at the view from the highest hill, we can see where we have been and where we are going.

Each painting explores different parts of the same journey, navigating between solitude and community, surrender and ambition, safety and risk. The continuous movement of the waves beats out a rhythm of life, giving and taking away: a meditation on the struggle to maintain momentum inside and outside the studio, and the joy that unexpectedly reveals itself along the way.
